Traditional african style djembes uses black shaved goat skin for djembe heads as the natural elasticity remains intact. In processing white djembe head quick lime is used which acts as a whiting agent but also compromises the natural elasticity. But in the traditional african style natural elasticity of leather is not compromised and gives a far superior sound and tone quality compared to the white djembe head.
